The Bernheim Forest Giants

A Whimsical Adventure in Kentucky’s Enchanted Forest

Buckle Up

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest, just 45 minutes south of Louisville, three larger-than-life wooden giants have become one of Kentucky’s most beloved attractions. These towering sculptures—crafted entirely from reclaimed wood—aren’t just stunning pieces of art; they tell a story of nature, sustainability, and human connection to the environment.

Whether you’re hiking the trails to find each giant, learning about their creation, or simply soaking in the magic, a visit to the Bernheim Forest Giants is an unforgettable adventure for families, nature lovers, and art enthusiasts alike.

1. The Story Behind the Bernheim Forest Giants

The Forest Giants in a Giant Forest project was created in 2019 by Thomas Dambo, a Danish artist renowned for his whimsical, large-scale sculptures made from recycled materials. His mission? To highlight the importance of sustainability, conservation, and storytelling through art.

Dambo has installed wooden giants all over the world, from Denmark to South Korea to Puerto Rico, but Bernheim’s Forest Giants hold a special place in his heart. Made entirely from reclaimed wood, including fallen trees and recycled materials from local bourbon distilleries, these sculptures seamlessly blend into the forest, inviting visitors to explore and interact with them.

2. Meet the Giants

Little Nis

The smallest of the three giants, Little Nis sits curled up on the ground with a friendly, curious expression. Kids love climbing onto his lap or taking pictures with his oversized hands. His gentle pose makes him a favorite stop for familiesexploring the forest.

Mama Loumari

The most breathtaking of the trio, Mama Loumari is a massive, reclining giantess who appears to be resting while cradling her “soon-to-be-born” child in her belly. Her intricate details and thoughtful expression make her one of the most photographed spots in Bernheim.

📍 Location: Deep within the forest, along the trails

Little Elina

Perched on the edge of a lake, Little Elina appears to be gazing at her reflection in the water. She’s the most peaceful and introspective of the three, reminding visitors to pause and appreciate nature’s beauty.
